This morning I was up early and spent some time with the LORD and His Word.  GOTTA LOVE THE OLD KING JAMES BIBLE!  Truths galore in a dark day brighten every thing in life.  We are all just a breath away from  eternity and this will all be forgotten.  So cheer up child you'll soon be dead. Ha!  Not so bad to go to Heaven.

I showered and dressed and Called some of my converts to make sure they were up and ready. I have had a great week of soul winning with 10 precious people trusting Christ.  I had 5 lined up for church this morning.

Marci & her Best Western staff

As I was leaving my room I noticed one of the cleaning ladies in the hall way.  Her name is Rose.  I said to her, "I am so sorry that you have to work on Easter Sunday!"  She teared up and said, "So am I!"  I gave her a Gospel tract and began talking to her.  Soon, Latonya walked by and quipped, "Don't forget to pray for me pastor!"  To make a long story short, soon I had the entire staff around me in the hall way telling the resurrection story of Christ.

Then a door opened down the hall and it was their boss Marci.  I thought to myself, "Oh my goodness she'll be upset and stop me from giving the Gospel to her workers."  I quickly told her who I was and what I was doing.  She did not smile or give any note of approval, but quickly walked toward all of us.  I thought well I tried any way.

She came into the middle of us and said, "Pastor, you take all the time you need."  Wow!  So I did take all the time I needed.  In a few minutes of going through Scriptures about the resurrection story, all of them bowed their heads and prayed out loud to receive Christ.

Pastor Shawn Cuthbertson

I drove to church on cloud 9.  In fact I passed the flying Nun on my way to church.  Pastor Cuthbertson has been the pastor of LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, for 3 1/2 years.  The church is  33 years old and was started in a brush harbor meeting.  They have been at their current location for 28 years.  Brother Cuthbertson was saved in this very church.  When he became pastor he had 26 people with 22 of those being over 60.

Sunday Morning

In spite of a thunder storm this morning there were over 100 folks in church. Several were saved in the service with 3 following the LORD in baptism.  The church was filled with young couples and young people. This is a good man of God and he is a personal soul winner.

I will be preaching tonight at 6 pm.  Also, I will be here Monday and Tuesday for special services.  The services will start at 7 pm each night.  Tuesday morning the day services will begin at 9 am.  If you are in the area please come and join us.

I will be traveling to Pine Bluff, ARK., to teach and preach at the LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH.  Pastor Shawn Cuthbertson is their pastor.  I will be teaching Sunday school as well as preaching both Sunday morning and Sunday evening.  There will be services on Monday night, Tuesday morning, and Tuesday night.  If you are able please come see us!

The last time I preached in Pine Bluff was in 1982.  Dr. Jack Hyles, Dr. Jim Vineyard, and myself shared the pulpit if you can imagine that.  We had a great time.  My good friend Evangelist Larry Smith was the pastor of the church at the time.  I believe the name of the church was VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH.

You will be blessed and helped by these books.  A lot of work has gone into them.  The trouble I had was in figuring out what chapters to leave out of the books as well as working on two books at the same time.

I believe the LORD would have me travel to help local churches and to write and publish books to keep the old time religion alive for the next generation.

I am shocked and appalled at the arrogance of young pastors who troll through the garbage of the internet and actually believe what anonymous writers write.

I also am shocked at the hatred, the vile language, the innuendos, the base less, the fact less, the heartlessness, the derogatory language, the attacks based on nothing, and the joining to the devil's crowd.  Most of them are merely revealing their immaturity.  The truth is their YOUTH is showing!

I will gladly fight for doctrine and against immorality, but I refuse to be a party to unsubstantiated talk. There are so many helps available to us from those great men of the past, but if we decide to slander these men because of hearsay we will suffer and not them.

If you want to focus on their humanity and use it against them to detract from the greatness of these men that is a terrible mistake.  Tearing them down does not help you build anything.

Dr. Hyles took the best of his mentors and incorporated it into his life.  He never focused on nor spread TRUTH about the humanity and flaws of his mentors in order to make him look better.  He preferred to focus on the great qualities of his mentors to help the generation following him.

Why do we believe a Linda Murphrey's attacks against her parents when she is associating with heretics and blasphemous people who attack the virgin birth, the King James Bible, and love buddhism, etc.  She glorifies drinking liquor.  She sees nothing wrong with living in adultery.  What she accuses others of is exactly what she is doing with her life.  Ironic!

She boldly one day brought her live in male to her moms place at a family gathering and in the front of all the family shouted, "Hey mom we are living together."  She was throwing it into the face of her godly mom.  What a brat! And this is your source?

You say isn't this gossip itself?  NO!  I'll tell you why because these are her own words as well as her female cohorts.

Why doesn't she open up and tell the world of her adultery, her fornication, her forgeries, her immorality.  If she really wanted to come clean she should start with her own life and then quit blaming others.  She didn't learn that lifestyle from her parents. She chose that lifestyle and then blames her parents.  CRAZY!

My four children are all serving God and married to great Christians.  However, that was their choice.  No parent can make a child turn out right, but the parent can make the child do right.

In the final analysis it is the child that decides and it results in the parents looking bad or good in the sight of others.  Mrs. G and I do not deserve the credit nor the blame for their choices.

My children could easily write about the tyrannical way they were raised.  I was a dictator.  However, Mrs. G was far worse than I was. Ha!

If our children chose to be rebels in our home then they would be rebels away from our home.  As a result they probably would write horrible things about their home life. All of it would be written through the eyes of rebellion.

So for Linda to come out and expose what others have always wanted to believe only reveals her rebelliousness! She viewed everything through the eyes of a teenage rebel.

Linda take responsibility for your own life and leave your deceased dad and 84 year old mother alone! You were spoiled!

If what Linda says be true doctrinaly then she needs to get born again.  Excuse me, but all of this has to do with her being angry for not receiving any money from dad after his death.   What parent bypasses his living mate to give directly to their children. Ridiculous!

She has nothing new to say except to rehash  what others have said and things she hated as a rebellious teen in order to promote a book.  She wants to hurt her mom because she could not live a rebellious life and receive her parents approval especially her mom.

Her mother is 84 years of age and does not deserve this from a child she went to the jaws of death to bring into this world.

I am so excited about my two new books that will soon be sent to the printers in Minnesota.  This has been and unusual journey in the fact of working on two books at the same time.  With the book "WHEN PRINCIPLE WAS KING" it took two years to write and publish.  By the way that book is not available in ebook form on SMASHWORDS.COM.  Just enter Bob Gray Sr. in the search box and it will direct you to my books.  When you get to that page highlight my name as author and it will direct you to the list of the rest of my books that are in ebook form.

This book "TRIAL BY FIRE-Satan's Attack On Independent Baptists"will deal with a myriad of attacks currently being sent by Satan against soul winning, standards, preaching, heroes, salvation, pastoral leadership, stand against homosexuality, invitations, autonomy of the local church, etc.

I am a first generation independent Baptist and my children are a second generation. I left the American Baptist to become a part of a great move of independent Baptists in the 70's.  I have enjoyed every step of the way in this journey of mine.

I have 10 grandchildren and they will be a third generation independent Baptists.  Recently God blessed our family with a great grandson named Blake Doyle.  Would you like to see a picture? Ha! Here he is!

I want this little fella to know and see what I have had the privilege of seeing in my life time. God built a great local church in Longview, TX., as a result of the leadership of some great men of God who pioneered the way.

God proved it could be done other than just in Chattanooga, TN, or Pontiac, MI, or Hammond, IN., etc. Our church in Texas is not an isolated ministry either.  Other great churches are still getting the job done around our nation.

I preached with the greats of yesterday.  Dr. Lee Roberson, Evangelist Lester Roloff, Dr. Curtis Hutson, Dr. Jack Hyles, Dr. Carl Hatch, and several others.  I lived in the day of the great ministries and I want the same for my grandchildren,  great grandchildren, and hopefully great great grandchildren.

In the book "JACK HYLES-The communicator" there are chapters such as "Personal communication skills,""A Great Story Teller," "Show Me Your Muscles,""Hello, My Name Is Jack Hyles,""Reeses Peanut Butter Cups,""Communing With Myself,""Jack Hyles-Teacher," "Jack Hyles-Preacher," "All Things To All Audiences,"and many other great chapters.

Please keep an eye open for the release of these two 400 page hard back books.  You can email me at to reserve a book, or purchase a case of 16 in advance for half price. If you loved "WHEN PRINCIPLE WAS KING" you will love these two also!

This was a great week for winning souls.  God gave 12 souls and several for the water this Lord's Day.  I am thrilled at the opportunity and the command to win souls.  I always look at it as more than a command, but rather as an opportunity.   Unfortunately there are several misconceptions and misunderstandings about personal soul winning.

  • It's a mistake to say that we soul win only when the Holy Spirit leads.
  • It's a mistake to say that the Bible is enough. (Acts 8:31-"except some man should guide me."
  • It's a mistake to say if we live right, people will come to us for salvation.
  • It's a mistake to say that soul winning is just for the preacher.
  • It's a mistake to say just be Christlike.
  • It's a mistake to say we should not persuade the unsaved to be saved. (II Corinthians 5:11; Luke 14:16-24)
  • It's a mistake to say that personal soul winning is "easy-believism."(Acts 8:36, 37, 38; Acts 4:4, 32; Acts 18:13; Acts 10:45; Acts 11:21; Acts 16:30, 31; Acts 18:8; John 3:16; John 3:36)
  • It's a mistake to say we can speak to the wrong person. (Mk 16:15)
  • It's a mistake to say men have the power to send people to Hell.
  • It's a mistake to think that your mission giving replaces the personal command to go soul winning.
  • It's a mistake to think that because soul winning is a commission to the local church that it replaces the personal command to go soul winning.

Pastor O'Daniel
Evangelist Allen

This week I, along with Evangelist Allen Domelle, were a part of the annual revival meeting hosted by the MARANATHA BAPTIST CHURCH of Bethany, OK. This church has been pastored by our good friend Pastor Charley O'Daniel for many years.

I drove to the meeting and Brother Domelle flew.   These Evangelists have it made don't they. Ha!  I thoroughly enjoyed myself with these good people.

Brother Domelle taught Sunday school and I preached Sunday morning my sermon "I HAVE FALLEN AND I CAN GET BACK UP!"  Sunday night Brother Domelle spoke on "THIS ONE THING I DO" and I preached my sermon "THE KEY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT IS MAN'S SPIRIT."

The pastor asked us to do something that in going on 41 years of ministry I have never been asked to do and that was to tell my life story on Monday night. Then he asked Brother Domelle to give his life story on Tuesday night.  It was a little uncomfortable, but God used the two.

Tuesday night

Tonight I preached my sermon "MY OBSERVATIONS ABOUT PERSONAL SOUL WINNING." I will be entering my 41st year of being a licensed ordained Baptist preacher and watched God bring a church from a low of 159 to averaging 2,041 per Sunday in 2008.  These are my observations not as a Bible professor who has never pastored, but as a soul winning pastor of a soul winning church.

Monday Night Opening
I had the honor of speaking once again for Dr. Mike Wells.  He pastors the PARKSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH.  This church hosts the annual BAPTIST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE.

Dr. Larry May spoke first on Monday night and I spoke second.  It was wonderful to see how the Lord worked.  Dr. May and I did not discuss our sermons, but both were on the necessity of Holy Spirit fulness.  I preached my sermon "THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT."   The altars were full and God met with us in a marvelous way.

Tuesday Day Workshop

Day workshops were conducted and Dr. Wells asked me to teach Tuesday morning.  It was good to see area pastors who attended. I spoke on "PILLARS OF A SUCCESSFUL INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH."  I referenced Matthew 28:19-20 with the emphasis on "...commanded things..." which must be taught first and remain as foundational commands in order to successfully spread the Gospel.

    • Time
    • Treasure
    • Talent

I have been juggling back and forth in finalizing two new books, which hopefully I will be able to publish before the end of summer.  "TRIAL BY FIRE-Satan's attack on Independent Baptists" and "JACK HYLES-COMMUNICATOR."  Both will be 300 to 400 pages in length with some intriguing and thought provoking chapters.

Every time I become absorbed in the material of one book then move to the next book I wonder if I have bitten more off than I can chew.  It is not a lack of material that is my problem.  I am in a quandary as to what to leave out of the books.

I hope that every young leader will take  the time to study great heroes of the faith.  This is not hero worship, this is just good old common sense that experienced successful men of God used that does not need to die with them.  God blessed them and God wants to do it again.

These were not perfect men, but they were successful in winning souls and building gigantic ministries.  Jack Hyles, Lee Roberson, Tom Malone, Curtis Hutson, Dallas Billington, Lester Roloff, J. Frank Norris, G. B. Vick, and many others were flesh and blood just as we are, but they must not be ignored or discredited because of their humanity.  We must learn from these men rather than discount them.

By the way they are not the ISSUE and even though there is a move on to discredit them and make them the issue...the cause of Christ is under attack and is the issue.  In 67 years of living, 56 years of being in the family of God, and going on 41 years of ministry I have yet to meet a perfect man or woman.  However, I can learn even from imperfect people.

When the vitriolic attacks are centered around Hammond, Jack Hyles, Lester Roloff, J. Frank Norris, Tom Malone and others, I have to wonder is there no good at all from these men.  Do the innuendos and accusations now become facts?  Most of you are too young to have facts and only the words of haters  on the internet are your resource, and we use to call that gossip.

  • We did not make Jack Hyles or these other men the issue
    • Others started the fight, we defend a friend, and then we are being blamed for the fight.
    • We followed these men, trusted these men, and we listened to them, but certainly do not and did not worship them.
    • We knew them well and knew they were human just like the rest of us.
    • We were encouraged because of their humanity seeing that God can still use sinners.
    • The thing that irritates those who oppose great men of the past is the blessings these great men had.
  • Defense of a friend, a hero, or a leader is not hero worship.
  • The greater the scope of a man's influence the greater the scope of his enemies.
    • Small town pastors are also attacked, but do not make news and are not scrutinized as much.
    • It happens to all who lead in the work of God at some time or another.
  • The attempt to find points of contention is an attempt to tempt a friend to turn on a friend.
  • When some disagree with a man's theology they tend to listen to accusations, thus looking for ways to attack his morality in order to discredit his theology.
  • The greater the figure head becomes the more visible target he becomes.
  • The real issue for our enemies is to stop the soul winning.

Friday, March 1, 2013

The past six and one half months have been dizzying to say the least.  The suffering has extended to many inside and outside of Hammond.  FBC of Hammond has certainly suffered, but so have churches all across America.   Many have felt the fallout of the tragedies of these past months.  Families have suffered.  Individuals have suffered.  Mrs. Hyles' and her family have suffered. The cause of Christ has suffered.  It has been a rough period of time.

So, who do we blame?  After all whenever we suffer it seems to make us feel better, in the short run, if we can assign the blame to someone.  Well, here are a few of my thoughts!

  • JACK SCHAAP IS NOT THE ONE TO BLAME.  He sinned! He fell for sure, but he is just a man and maybe if some had considered his humanity long ago they would have been less damage and hurt.
  • THE MERCHANTS OF SATAN ARE NOT TO BLAME.  Those accusers of the brethren certainly wreaked some havoc, but they are not to blame.  Besides, God will deal with those critics.
  • CRITICS OF JACK HYLES ARE NOT TO BLAME.  Oh yes, they relish in every chance to attach him to anything they think will prove their idiotic point, but they are not to blame.
  • FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IS NOT TO BLAME. Mistakes? Sure, they made a few, but we all do.  They chose a man as pastor and then gave him the loyalty Jack Hyles had earned and he had not.  Too much loyalty? Too long? Hey, let's face it hindsight is always 20/20.
  • INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS ARE NOT TO BLAME. Some who leave one group seem to feel they need to demonize a group to justify their decision to leave.  Sad and silly as well.  MOST of them I know in those circles are sincere and good people.  Demonizing a group is akin to demonizing everyone in the Tea Party as being racists or bigots.  It is fashionable to demonize groups, but illogical.  There are lessons to be learned, but blame should not be assigned.
  • THE HEATHEN WORLD IS NOT TO BLAME.  Now, that is always easy to do, but it would be a faulty assumption.   II Chronicles 7:14 puts the emphasis on God's people not the world.

Satan is the only one we can attach blame.  As long a we live in these sinful bodies he will do all he can to destroy the work and the people of God.  Blame him; not one another.

Now, we must each take responsibility for own sins and mistakes, but any blaming of one another is without value.  Allow the authority to dispense the judgment calls while the rest of us guard our own back yards.  If adjustments are to be made let them be adjusted to truth not innuendo.

Satan is our enemy, not each other.  As we attempt to forge ahead anew may we come from this situation with a greater love for truth, one another, and a renewed respect for our adversary the devil.  He wanders about seeking whom he may destroy.  Let truth defeat Satan and protect God's people.  Someday soon it will all be over...

I Corinthians 15:54, 57-58, "So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory...But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
